On the occasion of Culture Night, visitors will have the opportunity to taste mead, the ancient drink and learn about how it's brewed at the Settlement Exhibition on 23 August from 18:00 to 20:00. Admission is free and everyone is welcome.
Öldur is Iceland’s first meadery, founded by Sigurjón Friðrik Garðarsson and Helgi Þór Sveinsson in 2017.
Before founding Öldur, Helgi worked in brewing and distilling for three Icelandic companies, and both founders had been active in homebrewing in Iceland for many years.
Since Öldur’s founding, they have won awards both internationally and domestically and have studied everything there is to know about the art of mead-making (which should not be confused with beer brewing).
Today, Helgi oversees production at the meadery’s new facility in Hella, while Sigurjón is working on opening Kabarett, a multi-arts venue where mead will be flowing.
This event is part of the Reykjavík City Museum’s diverse program for Culture Night.
Accessibility is good in Aðalstræti. Please note that the lighting is rather dim inside the exhibition hall by the ruins, and the floor is uneven in some places. Guide dogs are welcome at the museum.
