Vík Prjónsdóttir emerged from a collaboration between designers Brynhildur Pálsdóttir, Guðfinna Mjöll Magnúsdóttir, Þuríður Rós Sigþórsdóttir, Egill Kalevi Karlsson, and Hrafnkell Birgisson. The aim was to design unique pieces from Icelandic wool and to generate attention and demand for locally made products. Their mission was to reverse the decline of knitting workshops, which were closing one after another. This was in 2005 and their collaborator was the knitting workshop Víkurpjón.
Vík Prjónsdóttir draws inspiration from Icelandic nature, folklore, and traditions. In 2018, the Museum of Design and Applied Art acquired the collection of Vík Prjónsdóttir. This includes products that went into production, along with sketches, samples, and prototypes.
In celebration of Vík Prjónsdóttir’s 20th anniversary, the staff at the museum will be archiving the collection. Visitors can observe as items are unpacked, photographed, filed in an open online system and finally repacked according to professional archival standards.
