A town festival will take place in front of the National Museum on Culture Night, Saturday, August 23, between 1:00 PM and 4:30 PM. The focus will be on town life in the 19th century.
Gísli Einarsson, editor of Landinn, will take on the role of the host.
The program will include a presentation on the Icelandic horse and its importance, wrestling demonstrations, poetry recitations and folk dances, and guided tours of the museum. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn how to ride a horse with a saddle and pack it with goods, enjoy traditional Icelandic pancakes (lummur), and learn about life in the 19th century. At the end of the program, photographer Einar Falur will offer a guided tour of his exhibition, A Conversation with Sigfús.
Admission to the museum will be free, and the museum café will be open as usual.
Program Schedule:
1:00–1:10 PM – Gísli Einarsson opens the festival
1:10–1:45 PM – Guided tour: The 19th century and live music
2:00–2:30 PM – Gísli Einarsson: The Icelandic Horse – The Most Faithful Servant
2:30–3:00 PM – Icelandic wrestling (glíma)
3:00–3:30 PM – Folk dances
3:30–4:30 PM – Guided tour: Einar Falur on A Conversation with Sigfús
In cooperation with the Árni Magnússon Institute, it will be possible to send letters created in a workshop at Edda, the House of Icelandic Language, Arngrímsgata 5, by post. Stamps must be purchased at the National Museum gift shop.
The event is held in collaboration with the Icelandic Horse Heritage Center.
