The SPIN project is an abbreviation for Sprogvenner i Norden — kunsten at forstå hinanden or Tungumálavinir á Norðurlöndum — listin að skilja hvert annað in Icelandic, which translates to Language Friends in the Nordic Countries — the art of understanding each other. The SPIN project started in October 2024 and will last for two years. The participants are students in 6th grade from Melaskóli and Háteigsskóli in Reykjavik, along with their peers from Eysturskúlin in Thorshavn in the Faroe Islands and Skovvangskolen in Aarhus, Denmark. The teachers of the children are involved in the project on behalf of the schools. The project is based on the fundamental idea that multilingualism is a valuable resource. The goal of SPIN is to increase sensitivity to cultural diversity and promote inclusion. Children deepen their understanding of their own linguistic and cultural diversity, as well as of their peers in the Nordic countries, through various creative projects and artistic expression. The project is being carried out in collaboration with the National Gallery of Iceland and Dokk1 in Aarhus. The project manager for SPIN is Kristín R. Vilhjálmsdóttir, and the Center for Language and Literacy is participating in the project on behalf of the Education and Recreation Department of Reykjavik City. A total of 250 students have works on display at the exhibition, and the participants have worked on creative projects based on self-identities and diversity.
