Guided Tour of the Exhibition Kjarval and the 20th Century: When Modernity Anchored Mouna Nasr – a Syrian-Venezuelan mother, pharmacist, and women’s rights activist. She has been actively engaged in community work in Iceland, serving as Chair of W.O.M.E.N. in Iceland and representing the association in the Multicultural Council. She is also the founder and owner of the translation company M+L ehf. With her strong commitment to supporting women and fostering intercultural dialogue, Mouna has been active in initiatives that promote equality, representation, and understanding across communities. The exhibition offers an overview of the development of Icelandic art over six decades of the 20th century through the works of Jóhannes S. Kjarval and his contemporaries. It traces the transition from nature-related Romanticism to Symbolism, Naturalism, and ultimately to Abstraction and Modernism. The exhibition reveals how social and cultural transformations influenced the artists’ styles and subjects, highlighting Kjarval’s role as one of the most prominent figures in Icelandic art.
