On the occasion of Ragnar Kjartansson's exhibition of the work Worldlight at the Reykjavík Art Museum and the 70th anniversary of Halldór Laxness' Nobel Prize, the Reykjavík Art Museum and Gljúfrasteinn Museum invite you to a unique event where art and literature meet. Artists Ragnar Kjartansson and Joan Jonas talk to Markús Þór Andrésson, Director of the Reykjavík Art Museum, about how Halldór Laxness's works have inspired them in their own artistic creation. Joan has been under influene of Kristnihald undir Jökli and Ragnar Worldlight. The conversation will raise questions about the afterlife of literature in visual art: What in Laxness's works offers such a transformation? About the participants: Joan Jonas (b. 1936) is an American visual artist and pioneer in performance and video art. She has had a profound influence on the development of contemporary art since the 1960s and is known for her work that combines movement, sound, text, and image. She has exhibited internationally, including at the Tate Modern, MoMA, and the Venice Biennale, where she represented the United States in 2015. Ragnar Kjartansson (b. 1976) is an Icelandic artist who works with performance, video, painting and music. His work is characterized by repetition, humor and emotional depth, and often refers to theater, music history and cultural heritage. He has exhibited in major art museums around the world and represented Iceland at the Venice Biennale in 2009. Halldór Laxness (1902–1998) is one of Iceland's most influential writers and was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1955. With works such as Independent People, Worldlight and Iceland's Bell, he renewed the art of storytelling and created profound social and existential discourse that has had an impact far beyond the borders of Iceland. The event is open to everyone and is part of the program of the exhibition Heimsljós in Hafnarhús.
