The signature dish, The Truck, includes American pancakes, bacon, potatoes, fried eggs, tomatoes, and toast. Coffee is a particular point of pride at the café. But no one will truly know until they try it—visitors are encouraged to stop by and experience the charm of this cosy coffee house.
Reservations are not available—guests are simply invited to show up with a smile!
History
Grái kötturinn opened its doors in October 1997. The original owners were a husband and wife, local artists Jón Óskar and Hulda Hákon. After two decades of serving coffee and breakfast, they sold the café to their friends, another couple. Today, Grái kötturinn remains family-owned and operated by Ásmundur and Elín.
The Name
Grái kötturinn means The Grey Cat. In Icelandic, there's a saying that someone who lingers frequently and for a long time in one place is "like a grey cat" to that place. Before the café opened, a jeweller worked in the same location. Strangely, a grey cat used to visit the jeweller and hang around the premises. No one knew where it came from or where it lived. The name was inspired by that mysterious feline, always hanging around, just like a grey cat.
