Ásmundarsalur was built in 1933 as an artist studio by one of Iceland’s premier and most loved sculptors Ásmundur Sveinsson.

Throughout the years it has served as an artist studio and residence, exhibition space and art school. It has also been the birth place of some of the most important early avant-garde activities in Iceland. Ásmundarsalur has recently reopened after two years of extensive renovations. The main focus was on bringing forward the original funkis architecture of the building. Ásmundarsalur is a privately run, nonprofit art space that is dedicated to all forms of art and design. This includes the performing arts with an emphasis on highlighting their diversity and interplay between the various art forms.
