Kjetil recommends: Non-touristy spots to enjoy in Reykjavík

Inspired by Kjetil's journey through Reykjavík? Follow in his footsteps and discover the places that made an impression on him. Saddle up for a horseback ride, slip into your swimsuit for a dip in a local pool, hike to scenic viewpoints and explore some of the city's best-known landmarks. 

These are some of the places Kjetil visited while getting to know Reykjavík. His route is a great place to find your new favourite spot in the city.

Horseback riding, Hafnarfjörður

Experience Iceland's unique horses on a guided riding tour with Íshestar in Hafnarfjörður. Known for their friendly nature and smooth gait, Icelandic horses offer a memorable way to explore  the countryside around Reykjavík. t outside Reykjavík, only a 15-minute drive from the Reykjavík city centre. 

Lágafellslaug, Mosfellsbær

One of the region's most popular family pools, Lágafellslaug pool features warm outdoor pools, hot tubs, waterslides and facilities for all ages. It is a great place to relax before (or after) a day of sightseeing. 

Höfuðstöðin - The Home of Chromo Sapiens, Reykjavík

Höfuðstöðin is home to Chromo Sapiens, the immersive art installation by Shoplifter (Hrafnhildur Arnardóttir). Explore a world of colour, creativity, and Icelandic design in a unique cultural setting. The venue also features workshops, a design shop, and a café-bar overlooking Elliðaárdalur valley.

Úlfarsfell, Mosfellsbær

Úlfarsfell is an easy and rewarding hike on the edge of Reykjavík, suitable for most fitness levels and accessible year-round. A well-marked trail leads from the parking area to the summit of Stórihnúkur, where a viewing platform offers wide views over Reykjavík, Mosfellsbær and the surrounding mountains. The hike is relatively short, making it a great option for those looking to experience Icelandic nature close to the city.

Elf Garden, Hafnarfjörður

Hafnarfjörður is often called Iceland's elf town. Take a walk through Hellisgerði park, a lava park filled with winding paths, lava formations and local folklore connected to hidden people and elves.

Kópavogsdalur, Kópavogur 

Despite its urban feel, Kópavogur is full of green escapes and scenic trails. Kópavogsdalur is a lush area with playgrounds, walking paths, and quiet picnic spots, making it perfect for families and joggers.

Þúfa Art Installation

Situated by Reykjavík's harbour, Þúfa is a large grassy mound created by artist Ólöf Nordal. Follow the spiral path to the top for views over the harbour and surrounding coastline.

Viðey

Take a short ferry ride from Reykjavík to Viðey, a peaceful island where you can explore scenic walking trails, discover centuries of history and enjoy impressive public art. As you make your way around the island, you'll find landmarks such as Viðey House and the Imagine Peace Tower, created by Yoko Ono in memory of John Lennon. Along the way, enjoy panoramic views across Faxaflói Bay, Reykjavík and Mount Esja.
