72 Hours in Reykjavik: A dance Journey with Kjetil

Now, you can follow in his footsteps and discover Reykjavik’s must-see spots. From well-known landmarks to hidden gems, this itinerary showcases the city’s highlights, inspired by Kjetil's unforgettable journey. Get ready to experience the very best of Reykjavik in just 72 hours!

Day 1: Hafnarfjörður, Garðabær and downtown Reykjavík

10:00 AM – Arrive and Drive to Hafnarfjörður

Begin your journey in the capital area with a scenic drive to Hafnarfjörður, a town steeped in Viking history. Viking Village is an exciting stop that recreates the life and atmosphere of early Viking settlers. 

12:00 PM – City stroll and ice cream

After lunch at the Viking Hotel, Take a relaxing stroll along the Hafnarfjörður Harbour, admiring the boats and seaside charm. Do as the locals do and enjoy an ice cream break by the local pond.

1:00 PM – Museum of Design and Applied Art, Garðabær

Head to Garðabær for a stop at the Museum of Design and Applied Art, where Icelandic design and craftsmanship are on display. From modern pieces to traditional textiles, this museum showcases the country’s creative spirit through the ages.

2:00 PM – Hofstaðir Viking Age Longhouse

Continue exploring Iceland’s Viking past with a visit to Hofstaðir, one of the country’s largest Viking longhouses, dating back to 870-930 AD. This ancient structure provides a rare look into the life of Iceland’s early settlers.

3:00 PM – Perlan 

Visit Perlan, where stunning views from the observation deck await. After enjoying the 360-degree views of Reykjavik and its surroundings, refuel with a coffee and explore the interactive Ice Cave Experience.

5:00 PM – Nauthólsvík Geothermal Beach

7:30 PM – Dinner at Hjá Jóni

1:00 PM – Árbær Open Air Museum

Travel to the Árbær Open Air Museum, where original turf houses and historic buildings provide a window into Iceland’s rural past. Walk through this living history museum and experience what life was like in old Reykjavik.

3:00 PM – Helgufoss in Mosfellsbær

Drive to Mosfellsbær for a hike to Helgufoss, a beautiful waterfall located in the town's scenic surroundings. The nature here is peaceful and perfect for a relaxing afternoon hike while taking in the stunning Icelandic landscape.

5:30 PM – Grótta, Seltjarnarnes

Day 3: Downtown Reykjavik

9:00 AM – Harpa Concert Hall

Begin the final day at Harpa Concert Hall, Reykjavik’s iconic glass building. Capture some great photos and take in the stunning architecture inside, especially around the beautiful staircase that’s a favourite for filming and photography.

10:00 AM – Sun Voyager Sculpture

Stroll along the seaside promenade to the Sun Voyager, a striking sculpture that symbolizes exploration, freedom, and adventure. It’s a must-see landmark that offers incredible views of the bay and mountains beyond.

11:00 AM – Þúfa Art Piece 

Next, visit the Þúfa Art Piece, a large, grassy mound that offers a unique blend of nature and art. Walk up the spiral path to the top for a lovely view over Reykjavik’s harbour.

1:00 PM – Hallgrimskirkja and Rainbow Street

Visit Hallgrimskirkja, Reykjavik’s towering cathedral with its distinctive design inspired by Iceland’s basalt columns. Climb to the top for panoramic city views before heading down the colourful Rainbow Street, which leads to the heart of the city’s shopping district.

3:00 PM – Shopping in the City Center

Spend time exploring the unique shops of downtown Reykjavik, from boutiques offering Icelandic wool products to quirky souvenir stores. As you wander, keep an eye out for the distinctive Reykjavik corrugated iron houses, painted in vibrant colours and adding a charming touch to the cityscape.

5:00 PM – Geothermal local pool

Take a dip in one of the geothermally heated outdoor public swimming pools.

8:00 PM – Aurora Basecamp (Northern Lights)

In the evening, try your luck at spotting the Northern Lights by returning to Aurora Basecamp. If the conditions are right, you may witness the real Northern Lights, a magical way to end your trip.
