The Museum of Design and Applied Art collects, preserves, researches, and exhibits Icelandic design from the beginning of the 20th century to the present day. Textiles, furniture, ceramics, fashion, product design, jewelry, graphic design and architecture are the fields the museum covers.

The museum consists of six spaces: The main exhibition space where the permanent exhibition, At Home in the Design Museum, is on display until 2027; a space for designers in residence; a small exhibition space, The Platform, for exhibitions of contemporary work; a space dedicated to research in the design field; a beautiful museum shop featuring works from around 30 Icelandic Designers and, finally, The Workshop for school visits, family workshops, lectures or simply to rest, play or read.
