Kristofer Rodríguez Svönuson presents brand new music under the name Watachico at a grand concert in Salurinn in Kópavogur. In his music, Kristofer explores the musical traditions of South America in his own personal way and blends them into his soundscape, the result is percussion-driven improvisational music that straddles the line between psychedelic Latin music and hymns. He is accompanied by a large cast of musicians, including Birgir Steinn Theodórsson, Daði Birgisson, Daníel Helgason, Ingibjörg Turchi, Matthías Hemstock, Örn Elías Guðmundsson (Mugison), Rósa Guðrún Sveinsdóttir, Samúel J. Samúelsson, Sölvi Kolbeinsson and Tumi Torfason. The band will perform Kristofer's latest work along with songs from his first album, Primo, which was nominated for the Icelandic Music Awards in 2020. The concert is free and all are welcome while space permits. The concert begins at 8 pm, but from around 7:30 pm, the band Nola Copa will perform Össur Geirsson's arrangements of swing music from New Orleans. The band consists of Arnar Leví Baldvinsson, Bríet Helga Hjartardóttir Ísberg, Egill Orri Ormarsson Líndal, Hildur Bella Rafnsdóttir, Ísak Trausti Ingólfsson Lehmann, Margrét Kristín Kristinsdótir, Rúnar Páll Árnason and Þóra Sif Óskarsdóttir. The concert is part of the Museum Night in Kópavogur. *** Kristofer Rodríguez Svönuson is a percussionist and composer of Icelandic and Colombian origin. He was born in 1988 and grew up in Kópavogur, where he still lives today. In 2014, Kristofer graduated from FÍH. On behalf of the school, he participated in various projects both domestically and abroad, most notably participating in the Young Nordic Jazz Comets with the band Two Beat Dogs and winning a prize at the Nótan 2013 with the band Gaukshreiðrið. Kristofer studied percussion in Cuba under the guidance of David Lopez and in Colombia under the guidance of Fabio Ortiz, who is considered by many to be the leading percussionist in South America at the moment. Kristofer has worked with many of Iceland's leading musicians in jazz, world music and pop, including Mugison, KK, Hjálmar, Cell7, Júníus Meyvant, Los Bomboneros, Lay Low, Tómas R. Einarsson, Stuðmenn, Sunna Gunnlaugsdóttir, Skuggamyndir frá Býsans, Ragnheiður Gröndal, SJS Big Band, Sigríður Thorlacius, Berndsen, Kristjana Stefánsdóttir, Reykjavík Big Band, Kira Kira, Ingibjörg Turchi and Soffía Björg. Kristofer has also played with musicians and composers such as Jack Steadman (Bombay Bicycle Club) and Nighmares On Wax. Kristofer has written and released music, both alone and with other musicians. In 2019, he released his first album, Primo, which was released by Lucky Records and was nominated for Album of the Year in the open category at the Icelandic Music Awards. Kristofer is currently working on a new album.
