everyone welcome
I would like to welcome (with warm) you to my exhibition opening, which is a small retrospective of my work from the last decade or so. I will display oil paintings that and I connect the exhibition to the milestone of turning forty and would like to visually look back before turning the focus entirely on the future.
When I think about the last decade or so and I find no one word to define this period of time,
Judidh Butlers title of lecture from 2021: Debt, Guilt, Responsibility, Obligation, comes in my mind.
I have not had the honor of listening to her wise words but i feel she is making a good point.
Flavor of words: paintings painted in a era of no single word of definition. Hint of Weimar republic
resemblance, decay of comforting decadence, Icelander then twice colonialized in neo populism
(D)emocratic times I need to be heard, forgive me my resentment and student debt I yearn for
Democratic Respect – and I adore the struggle for Recognition!
Una Ástu Gunnarsdóttir, born in 1985, was raised in downtown Reykjavík. Since 2007, she has spent much of her time living in Denmark. She briefly studied house painting at the Technical College before being accepted into the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen.
Una is a versatile painter with a strong academic and artistic background spanning fine arts, philosophy, translation studies, and horticulture. She earned her MFA from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen in 2017, with a focus on painting and philosophy.
Una has participated in numerous exhibitions regularly. Recent highlights include solo exhibitions at AAAA Galleri in Copenhagen (2022 and 2024) and group exhibitions at Fyrirbæri in Reykjavík (2023). Her works have been acquired by Statens Kunstfond (the Danish Arts Foundation) and the City of Copenhagen, and she has received grants from the A.P. Møller Foundation and the Danish Tennis Foundation. In 2017, she was nominated for the EXTRACT Young Art Prize at Gl. Strand in Copenhagen.

Her work reflects her diverse background and deep interest in art, culture, and society. With her unique artistic style and focus on the interplay between art and life, Una has established herself as a distinctive voice in the art world, both in Iceland and abroad.
