Bríet Bjarnhéðinsdóttir played a significant role in securing legal reforms for women and thereby strengthening democratic society as a whole. She founded the Icelandic Women’s Rights Association in 1907 and served as its first chairperson from its founding until 1928. The association’s goal was to work toward full political equality for Icelandic women with men—voting rights, eligibility for election, the right to hold public office, and equal employment opportunities.
