The National Gallery of Iceland, established in 1884, is a leading art museum in Iceland. The building was initially built in the early 20th century as an icehouse, and today it houses the National Gallery collections.

The National Gallery's collection consists mainly of 19th, 20th and 21st century art, of which many are landmarks in Icelandic art history. The museum also possesses a fine collection of international art.

The principal functions of the National Gallery are the collection, conservation, research, education, and presentation of Icelandic and international art. The gallery primarily hosts group and solo exhibitions, highlighting both Icelandic and international artists, while also fulfilling an important educational and informative role.

The gallery shop sells books in English about Icelandic art, as well as a range of gifts and souvenirs. There you can also find a welcoming and comfortable café.
