Inspired by Iceland’s dramatic natural landscapes, the church’s striking architecture is one of the finest examples of modern Icelandic design. Hallgrímskirkja is named after the 17th-century poet and pastor Hallgrímur Pétursson, best known for his beloved Passion Hymns.
As part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Iceland, Hallgrímskirkja is an active church community that hosts regular worship services, concerts, cultural events, and educational programmes throughout the year. Every day, thousands of visitors come to experience its unique atmosphere, beautiful interior, magnificent organs, and panoramic views from the tower.
Admission to the church is free of charge. Tower admission is ISK 1,400 for adults, ISK 200 for children aged 7–16 and free for children aged 0-6. Winter opening hours are 10:00-17:00.
