Mosfellsbær

Health and recreation with a touch of history

With outdoor activities as its greatest attraction, get ready for a journey of beautiful hikes in diverse landscapes, historic sites, wool shopping, and more, all within the Mosfellsbær area.

Enjoy the hiking paths that lie from the seashore to the mountains. Walk or run up one or more of the seven peaks surrounding the area. Learn about the life and works of Nobel Prize laureate Halldór Laxness at his former home Gljúfrasteinn, which is now a museum. Take the lovely hiking paths that lie from the museum to the historic Mosfellskirkja church. Go horse riding. Visit the interesting artistic community of Álafosskvos, where they sell handmade arts, crafts, and knives; and the Álafoss store, which has been offering handmade wool products at reasonable prices since 1896. Take the kids to Hraðastaðir, a fun petting zoo with Icelandic farm animals. And don’t forget to visit Lágafellslaug, a family-friendly thermal pool with three water slides, various jacuzzis, a sauna, a steam bath, and more.

Mt. Úlfarsfell

"Úlfarsfell" is lower than its sister "Esja", and definitely not as well known. But it's actually closer to central Reykjavík and offers just as an impressive view over the city.

Dramatically dominating the Reykjavík City skyline and providing a stunning backdrop to the capital area is the impressive Mount Esja, a popular destination for day-trippers and riddled with well-worn hiking trails. Once surmounted, the view from the top of this 914-metre high mountain is breathtaking.
