Celebrating Fishermen's Day in Reykjavík and Hafnarfjörður
Fishermen’s Day (Sjómannadagurinn) is a much-loved celebration that reflects traditional Icelandic culture and the nation’s long-standing dependency on fishing. Held on the first Sunday in June, it honours the fishermen whose courage and hard work helped build the nation.
The tradition dates back to June 6, 1938, when it began as a way to bring fishermen together. Over time, it grew into a nationwide celebration of Iceland’s fishing heritage and became an official holiday for fishermen in 1987.
Today, communities across the country, especially around the harbours, mark the day with lively, family-friendly events. Expect parades, live music performances, sea rescue demonstrations, and plenty of hands-on activities. Visitors can try sailing, sea swimming, taste seafood, explore maritime displays, visit fishing vessels, see and touch sea creatures on display on ice in tubs. The event, including admission to Reykjavík Maritime Museum and Óðinn Coast Guard Vessel, is free of charge.
