The Basic Weaving Course is a practical course where students are given the opportunity to become familiar with the possibilities of weaving. The aim of the course is for students to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to set up a loom and weave a weft of their own choice. Each student is assigned a loom and works on an individual project that is planned in consultation with the teacher, with an emphasis on the feasibility of implementing the project within the course timeframe. The course will emphasize that students work freely based on their own interests. Trial and experimental work will be valued equally with defined projects.
At the beginning, students receive a brief introduction to weaving theory, how to read patterns, follow instructions and estimate the amount of yarn for a warp in weaving. Students receive a brief introduction to the main weaving methods and choose a method and weft pattern to use in future projects.
Students set up a loom themselves under the guidance of a teacher and weave a weft afterwards. While weaving, students will receive guidance on technical aspects and finishing techniques.
Students are required to provide their own materials but will have access to the loom during school office hours during the course.
The course will be held on Monday and Wednesday evenings from June 16 to August 20, for a total of ten sessions. Five sessions will take place in June and five sessions in August.
Completion of the course is based on 80% attendance. The course will be taught in Icelandic.
