Between 2010 and 2018, Guðmundur Einar took a large number of photographs of people and objects that caught his eye – mainly in Reykjavík, but also in London and New York. The photographs, which he only developed recently, capture the atmosphere of that period. When he saw them, he realized that, to him, they were treasures.
Behind the images are memories of a bygone time, past relationships, a different worldview. They depict a society that once was, but also an unexpected, discovered chapter in his own life story. Among the subjects are various nationally recognized individuals, many of whom were unknown when the photos were taken. The images raise questions related to memory and zeitgeist. How do we remember things? Is a photograph a more reliable record of an atmosphere than memory itself? Do we understand the moment better when we dwell in it, or when we, much later, place it in the context of time? Does the photo tell the truth, or is it chosen—and to some extent staged—as an attempt to tell a particular story?
Access for people with disabilities is good. Service dogs are welcome at the museum.
Public transport: The nearest bus stops are called Hafnarhús, Lækjartorg, Ráðhúsið (2–5 min. away).
