The focus is on working with the environment in the spirit of sustainability and using what nature provides in a creative way. A variety of natural materials and methods of crafts and art are used. The goal of the course is to increase participants' awareness and connection to their environment and nature through research, discoveries, play and togetherness.
The summer courses at the Botanical Garden have been popular since 2018. The course instructor is Þórey Hannesdóttir, a designer and working art teacher with a master's degree in art education from the Iceland Academy of the Arts. She has led family workshops in collaboration with the Botanical Garden in Reykjavík and the Árnesinga Art Museum and has worked as a volunteer since 2019 in workshops for Örninn, a memorial and support fund for children who have lost someone close to them. She is also a creative outdoor education enthusiast with many years of experience working with children. The Botanical Garden is a living open-air museum that can be used for education, research and enjoyment.
