Hafnarfjordur is home to Þytur sailing club, a long-established sailing club, welcomingly hosts cruising boats on its moorings and pontoons and has often hosted boats over the Icelandic wintertime for long periods. The club offers dinghy sailing courses for children during the summertime and operates a sailing club for those who have experience with keelboat sailing, dinghy training and kayaking. Þytur hosts regular open houses to allow anyone with an interest in sailing to meet the members of the club and go sailing.
