Fálkaklettur via Ferrata

Fálkaklettur (Falcon Rock) is a via ferrata route on Mt. Esja, just outside Reykjavík, set along the coastal slopes overlooking the city and the open sea. Developed by the Icelandic Mountain Company, it brings a form of alpine climbing - more commonly found in mainland Europe - into an Icelandic landscape.

The award-winning route follows a fixed line of steel cables anchored into the rock, allowing movement across exposed sections using climbing equipment. Originating in the Alps, this “iron path” format has been adapted here to trace a line up the mountain, ending with a suspension bridge suspended above the terrain below.

Access begins at the Mt. Esja hiking area, around 25 minutes from Reykjavík, with the full route covering a steady ascent of the mountainside. The terrain combines steep hiking with sections of vertical movement, requiring balance, grip, and comfort with height rather than prior climbing experience.
