Reykjavík on a Budget

You´ve probably heard that Reykjavík is a very expensive city to travel to but there are various places to visit and things to do which don´t cost a thing or very little.

You´ve probably heard that Reykjavík is a very expensive city to travel to but there are various places to visit and things to do which don´t cost a thing or very little.

In Reykjavík you will find country parks, nature reserves and the capital area is also surrounded by amazing hiking routes and landscapes. If you want to experience the beach like a native we recommend Nauthólsvík Geothermal Beach. It´s free in the summer and you will have access to hot pots, changing rooms, showers, a place to keep your valuables and a snack bar. A part of the beach has hot water running into the ocean and you can also test your resistance to the cold and take a swim in the North Atlantic Ocean.

There are amazing landmarks, galleries and museums and neighbourhoods where you can absorb the culture and maybe even talk to the natives. To name a few: Harpa, the Solfar Sun Voyager, Hallgrímskirkja (Tower lift costs 900 kr) and the Reykjavík Literary Walk (it´s free!)

If you´re in the mood to shop or love going to malls, we have two free running shuttle buses to two of our major malls which depart from the City Hall in Reykjavík. The bus schedule for Kringlan Mall and the schedule for Smáralind Mall. Also, look for the pink pig logo with the name Bónus, an Icelandic supermarket chain which sells food at very reasonable prices.

We recommend the Reykjavík City Card for those of you who plan on seeing and doing a lot during your stay in Reykjavík. You can buy 24, 48 or 72-hour cards. It offers free entry to a great selection of museums and galleries, all thermal pools in Reykjavík and free unlimited travel by bus within the Reykjavik Capital Area. In addition, the card also gives you a free ferry trip to Viðey Island and discounts on various tours, in shops and services.

Enjoy your stay, Reykjavík Loves Visitors!
