Icelandic Saga & Heritage Association

ISHA – Icelandic Saga & Heritage Association was founded by 18 members in 2006. The association have now around 80 members, from all regions of the country. ISHA is a forum for collaboration for those involved in Saga & Heritage tourism in Iceland, especially regarding publicity, quality and professional standards (museums, exhibitions, Saga sites etc). It initially focused on the heritage of medieval Icelandic literature, the first centuries of Iceland’s history and medieval culture.

Austurvöllur square and public park

Austurvöllur is a public square and park in Reykjavík. The square is a popular gathering place for the citizens of Reykjavík, especially during good weather for the square is surrounded by cafés on Vallarstræti and Pósthússtræti. It has also been a focal point of protests, as it is near the Parliament of Iceland.

The square contains a large statue of Jón Sigurðsson, a leader of Iceland's independence movement.

Hallgrímskirkja Church Tower

The Evangelical-Lutheran church Hallgrimskirkja is a living and thriving church in the center of Reykjavík. Hallgrímskirkja is both a national monument, dedicated to the most renowned sacred poet of Iceland, Hallgrímur Pétursson, and a mid-town parish church with a vibrant parochial life and musical activity. Hallgrímskirkja is the largest church in Iceland and towers over the centre of Reykjavík. It also houses the largest organ in the country.

Þúfa

Þúfa was designed by the Icelandic artist Ólöf Nordal, who sought to create a place of serenity and meditation in the bustling capital city. It is located by Reykjavík harbor in the Grandi area. The word “þúfa” in Icelandic means a tussock, but it can also mean a small mountain or a hummock. On the top of the hill is a shed for drying fish. The work was commissioned by the fish factory HB Grandi in 2013.
