A Beautiful New Year’s Concert Program by an Artistic Couple

In the new year, audiences will be able to enjoy a refined film-concert program in which Icelandic churches and nature take center stage. The project is titled New Year’s Concerts from Churches and Nature of South Iceland and is created by the artistic couple Alexandra Chernyshova, soprano and composer, and Jón Rúnar Hilmarsson, photographer and filmmaker, in collaboration with the cultural and educational organization DreamVoices ehf.

The project is a 30-minute film–concert program in which Alexandra’s musical performance is interwoven with beautiful imagery of churches around the country and Icelandic nature. The aim of the project is to make classical music accessible to a broad audience while at the same time highlighting Iceland’s churches as an important part of the nation’s cultural heritage.

Recordings took place in numerous churches, including Þingvellir Church, Skálholt Cathedral, and Hallgrímskirkja, among others. The program features classical works, including the motet Exsultate Jubilate by composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, as well as works by Charles Gounod and by Alexandra herself.

Alexandra is the artistic director of the project and performs the music, while Jón Rúnar is responsible for cinematography and video production and serves as the project’s executive producer. Over the past two decades, they have collaborated on many ambitious projects, including the film Magical Sky Iceland, an original sinfonietta, New Year’s Concerts from the Churches of the Reykjanes Peninsula, and projects at Hljómahöll, all of which received very positive audience responses.

The project received funding from the South Iceland Development Fund as well as from the Church Fund of the National Church of Iceland.

The music program will premiere online on January 1, 2026, at 8:00 PM, on Alexandra’s website and her YouTube channel, and will be open to everyone.
