On Museum Night, guests are welcomed to the Conservation and Research Center of the National Museum of Iceland at Tjarnarvellir in Hafnarfjörður. There, national relics are preserved under the best possible conditions.
The center is located at Tjarnarvellir 11 in Hafnarfjörður, but the building has a special technical room that controls the humidity and temperature in the building's storage areas. This ensures that all artifacts are preserved under ideal conditions, whether they are organic materials, delicate textiles, excavated relics, metal artifacts or other artifacts.
The National Museum's storage rooms hide various treasures that embody the country's history and culture. They contain around 500,000 artifacts, ranging from skeletons, woodwork and national costumes to vehicles. Only fragments of the collection find their way to exhibitions, so this is a unique opportunity to catch a glimpse of these precious treasures.
The building also has facilities for research and general work, both for staff of the museum and for external scholars. Tjarnarvellir is home to specialists from the National Museum of Iceland, as well as facilities for academics and scientists, students, teachers and other collaborators.
The museum's specialists guide visitors through the storage spaces, introduce the collection and explain the conditions necessary to ensure its good preservation.
Two times are offered, at 6 pm and 7 pm. Registration is required for the visit, and it takes about 45 minutes. Please note that only 15 people are accepted for each guided tour, so please register to the event.
There is no admission fee for the museum's events on Museum Night.
