On Saturday, January 17, authors Fríða Ísberg and Brynja Hjálmsdóttir will welcome the great poet Kim Hyesoon to Mengi.
The South Korean Kim Hyesoon is one of the most significant contemporary poets. She has received numerous awards for her work, which has been published in many languages and has provoked strong responses around the world.
She has been widely honored in her home country, and her book Autobiography of Death received the prestigious Griffin Poetry Prize in 2019. Phantom Pain Wings (2023) was selected as Poetry Book of the Year by The New York Times and The Washington Post. Hyesoon lives and works in Seoul, where she teaches creative writing at the city’s university of the arts.
The event begins at 8:00 p.m. and will consist of poetry readings and discussion.
Admission is free, and a small booklet containing Icelandic translations of the poet’s work will be available to guests free of charge while supplies last. The translations are by Hye J. Park and Brynja Hjálmsdóttir.
The event is supported by Reykjavík UNESCO City of Literature and the King Sejong Institute.
