The current exhibition at the Sigurjón Ólafsson Museum, “Face to Face,” features a selection of portraits by Sigurjón Ólafsson, including his oldest known portrait, a relief he made in 1924 when he was just 16 years old. Visitors will meet with many representatives of older generations, many of whom had an impact on the society of their time, and see how Sigurjón interpreted their personalities into lasting material. Art historian Aðalsteinn Ingólfsson says in the exhibition catalogue: “Sigurjón Ólafsson was, without doubt, the most inspired and incisive portrait sculptor that Iceland has produced. His genius manifests itself not least in his technical proficiency, the many ways he had of illuminating the characters of his sitters, male and female. His sensitivity to the temperament of individuals is aligned with an unusual psychological acuity.”
