Join us on 24 October at 13:30 for an Icelandic Sign Language guided tour of the coast guard vessel Óðinn at the Reykjavík Maritime Museum. Sigurlín Margrét Sigurðardóttir, a sign language guide, will lead guests around the ship.

Explore the ship, learn about its history, life on board, and its important role in the Icelandic Coast Guard. The tour lasts approximately one hour.

Please note: The vessel has steep ladders, low ceilings, and narrow spaces, and is not suitable for visitors with limited mobility or claustrophobia.

Workshop 🎨 Inner and Outer Reality – What Animal Am I on the Inside?

Einar Jónsson’s sculpture Rest depicts a large face partially concealed by basalt columns. We will study the work carefully—the more we look, the more we see. Afterwards, we will create masks that cover half the face. The masks will take the form of animals, prompting us to consider the question: “If I were an animal on the inside, what animal would I be?”

We warmly welcome you to the opening of Ísar Svan's solo exhibition, A Truthful Translation of Experience, this Saturday, 24th of October between 17-19 at Þula Hafnartorg.

A Truthful Translation of Experience continues Ísar Svan’s exploration of the landscapes of childhood and how they continue to emerge in his work. In these works, the landscape does not appear as a direct depiction of a specific place, but rather as a source of images, forms, and emotions that are continually transformed through painting. The works approach landscape as something that remains within us, continuing to shape our experiences long after we have left a place behind. Through painting, Ísar seeks to translate these experiences into a visual language in which the boundaries between memory, lived experience, and imagination become blurred.

Ísar Svan (b. 1999) is an emerging artist based in Reykjavík. His practice centers on exploring the relationship between his internal landscapes and the physical environment he grew up in – an emotional terrain that continues to exert a deep, enduring influence.

Primarily a painter, Ísar also works with drawing and video, weaving together introspective narratives that often blur the lines between memory and geography.

Frosti Fjalar: Bjarmaband – Curator Talk

Sunday October 25th at 2 p.m., curator Ásdís Spanó will lead visitors through the exhibition Bjarmaband and discuss Frosti Fjalar’s life and art, his career and working methods, as well as the development of the exhibition and the work behind it.

The exhibition presents a selection of works by Frosti, who pursued his practice in solitude for several decades. Frosti, formerly known as Jakob Jónsson, had a long career spanning more than half a century. Following an active period of exhibiting in the 1970s and 1980s, however, he withdrew from public exhibitions and was no longer active publicly or within the art community. Across his long career, his visual language was shaped by a refined sense of form, disciplined composition and a profound sensitivity to colour.

Frosti Fjalar (1936-2026) studied art in Copenhagen, first at Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek and later at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, and also earned a degree in structural engineering from KTH in Stockholm. After his final exhibition in 1991, he disappeared from public view, although he continued to work with exceptional perseverance. He left behind nearly six thousand watercolours and around eight hundred paintings.

Þóra Sigurbjörnsdóttir, guides guests through the exhibition Spirit and Materiality at the Einar Jónsson Museum.

The exhibition Spirit and Materiality offers profound insight into Jónsson’s creative vision. Inside the museum, visitors can also explore the remarkable preserved apartment of Einar and Anna Jónsson, where their original style and personal belongings remain intact.

A valid museum admission ticket is required to attend the event.

The National Museum of Iceland offers an exciting programme of events every Sunday throughout the winter and spring months. On the first Sunday of each month, there is a programme for children and families. On other Sundays, museum specialists offer guided tours of the museum’s exhibitions, while on the last Sunday of each month, the specialist-led tour is conducted in a foreign language.

The tour is included with museum admission. Please note that your admission ticket also serves as an annual pass, giving you unlimited access to the museum's exhibitions and events for one year from the date of purchase. Ada Stańczak will lead a guided tour in Polish of the exhibition Leaky Bodies, Shared Worlds: Works from the Bunkier Sztuki Collection in Krakow in Hafnarhús on Sunday 25 October at 14:00.

The exhibition features works exclusively from the collection of Bunkier Sztuki, home to one of Europe’s leading collections of Polish contemporary art. It includes photography, painting, sculpture, and installations by thirty artists from Poland.

The exhibition highlights the diversity and vitality of Polish contemporary art and places it in an international context. The works have travelled from Krakow to Reykjavík, where they are presented in a society shaped in part by a strong Polish presence.

The exhibition offers a unique opportunity to discover some of Poland’s leading contemporary artists while strengthening cultural ties between Iceland and Poland.

The guided tour will be in Polish.

Embroidery Gathering – Add Your Stitches to Guðrún’s Flower Garden

The National Museum of Iceland and Annríki invite visitors to a series of embroidery gatherings inspired by the traditions of our foremothers during the early winter months. Visitors will have the opportunity to discover the art of floral embroidery and contribute to a collaborative handicraft project that will be preserved at the museum.

The gatherings will begin following the Sunday guided tours or Tuesday lectures on the following dates:

🌸Mother of Flowers – Guðrún Skúladóttir (1740–1816)

Guðrún Skúladóttir was renowned for her exquisite craftsmanship. The exhibition features three skirts made by her, all adorned with colourful flowers created using traditional floral embroidery techniques. Guðrún earned her living through embroidery and teaching handicrafts at her workshop, Annríki, in Viðeyjarstofa. By the end of her life, she had earned the honorary title "Mother of Flowers."

During the embroidery gatherings, participants will gain insight into the world of traditional women's handicrafts by embroidering flowers onto woollen fabric using colourful, naturally dyed yarn. We will come together, learn from one another and enjoy adding our own stitches to Guðrún's flower garden.

🧵A Collaborative Handicraft Project

Instruction in floral embroidery will be provided, and all materials will be available on site, including woollen fabric with a printed pattern, naturally dyed yarn and needles. Experienced craftspeople from Annríki – Traditional Costumes and Jewellery will guide and assist participants.

The embroidery will be completed at the museum, where the finished pieces will remain. Eventually, they will be assembled into a skirt bearing the stitches of everyone who has taken part.

For those who wish to continue embroidering at home, floral embroidery kits will be available for purchase in the museum shop.

A museum admission ticket includes participation in the event. Family workshop at Pakkhúsið

On Monday 26 and Tuesday 27 October, from 11am to 1pm children with families are invited to participate in two workshops:

🧵 Clothespin dolls: In the old days, people made their own toys. We recommend visiting our toy exhibition in the attic, then try making your own clothespin doll to take home.

🤾 Handball jerseys on clothespins: After looking at the exhibition titled Hafnarfjörður: The Handball Town design your own paper jersey, front and back, in your own colours with your favourite number.

Best suited for ages 6–12 and their families. Free admission. Everyone is welcome!

Pakkhúsið is part of Hafnarfjörður Museum (Byggðasafn Hafnarfjarðar) and will be open 26-27 October from 11:00 to 15:00.

Every Tuesday at lunchtime throughout the winter and spring months, the National Museum of Iceland offers a variety of events, including film screenings, guided tours and lectures.

On Tuesday, 27 October, from 12:00 to 12:45, archaeologist Dr Steinunn Kristjánsdóttir will discuss a remarkable cap discovered during excavations at Þingeyrar in Húnaþing in the summer of 2021. The cap was found in the grave of Jón Þorleifsson, who served as steward of the former monastery estate for several years. He died while holding the position in 1683, at just 27 years of age. A signet ring bearing the coat of arms of Jón’s family and his initials (J Þ) was also found in the grave, making it possible to identify the man buried there.

The cap is made of silk (velvet) and decorated with silver lace. Caps of this kind were fashionable among the European nobility in Jón’s time, and comparable examples have been found both in Iceland and neighbouring countries. Its discovery therefore suggests that Icelanders kept abreast of the latest fashions, just like other Europeans. But the cap is remarkable for more than the object itself. It also led to some unexpected discoveries, which Steinunn will reveal in the lecture.

This concert features arfi, KHAIRKHAN and Strákurinn fákurinn.

Harpa, in collaboration with the Reykjavík Music City and Rás 2, is hosting Upprásin, a concert series dedicated to grassroots Icelandic music, across musical genres. Upprásin is now taking place for the fourth year in a row and a total of 27 bands will perform, three on each concert night.

Ticket prices are only 2000 ISK and 5000 ISK for those who want to contribute more. It is also possible to contribute a higher amount during the ticket sales process, which will go directly to the artists.

arfi is an Icelandic/German trio, creating an experimental blend of electronic and organic pop, introspective music for rapidly changing times. The group formed after meeting at an improvisation workshop in Fredericia, Denmark in 2023, where they discovered a shared love for melodic pop and spontaneous creation. The trio consists of Katrín Helga Ólafsdóttir (K.óla) on vocals and bass, Stefan Vidal-Schneider on drums and synthesizers, and Tobias Link on trombone, effects, and synths, with mixing and mastering by Lukas Streich.

Their six-track debut EP spring underwater, out May 8, 2026, was recorded in Iceland in January 2025 in collaboration with artists including Sóley and RAKEL. Their music explores the tension between hyper-connected digital culture and human nature, capturing both the chaos and beauty of today’s electric world.

KHAIRKHAN is an Inner Mongolian musician from the Khorchin Tribe in the east side of Inner Mongolia and lives in Reykjavík, Iceland. He grew up in the famous Khorchin grasslands with rich folk music and stories.

He focuses on traditional Mongolian instruments such as morin khuur, tsuur and tovshuur, also Mongolian throat singing as one of his main performances. The folk music he plays is mainly from Khorchin region, where a great amount of Mongolian folk music and genres were born.

Currently Khairkhan is trying to create a new concept of experimental Mongolian folk music as a 21st century nomad living in the city. There is a meaning of keeping the roots passed down through centuries but in a modern method.

Strákurinn fákurinn is a band from Akureyri, Iceland, playing apocalyptic no wave. The band consists of Agnieszka Staroń, Kęstutis Balčiūnas, Drengurinn fengurinn, and Stefán Bessason.

Hróðmar Sigurðsson Quartet

Guitarist and composer Hróðmar Sigurðsson will perform his original music with his quartet. He released his debut album, Hróðmar Sigurðsson, in 2021, followed by his second album, +1, in 2025. His music blends jazz with influences from rock, ambient, and soul, while incorporating elements of free improvisation. The quartet plays an integral role in shaping the arrangements and developing the overall sound of the music. Hróðmar was named Newcomer of the Year at the 2021 Icelandic Music Awards, while his band was also nominated for Performer of the Year at the same awards.

Do you love knitting or crocheting as well as reading and chatting about good books? Then these meetups are something for you.

We will meet on Thursdays between 3 pm and 5 pm in the Handicraft Corner on the 2nd floor in Grófin.

It’s nice to combine those two interests and even better to connect with others who share the same passion.

Guðrún Dís, amateur knitter, takes care of the meetups, shows up with some interesting books and leads the discussion.

This is not a traditional reading club because you don’t have to read specific books before each meeting. Just show up and take part!

The meetups can be in Icelandic and/or English, depending on the group.

No registration needed, just pop in when you are in the mood for good company.

Good Thursday at the National Gallery

Two compositions that address the ultimate logic of existence are the subject of this highly dramatic concert. Isle of the Dead is a moving tone poem by Rachmaninoff, inspired by the painting of the same name by Arnold Böcklin and Symphony No. 13, "Babi Yar", by Shostakovich, is a magnificent work for bass, male choir, and orchestra set to poems by Yevgeny Yevtushenko. The work is a testament of moral fortitude and human compassion, where bitter irony and deep grief collide. Together, these two masterpieces create a powerful experience that leaves no one untouched. Bass singer Alexander Roslavets is a rising star in the opera world and has been well received everywhere he goes. Conductor Andris Poga conducted the Iceland Symphony Orchestra last year to great acclaim.

Bartók’s Bluebeard’s Castle performed in Iceland for the first time – only two performances!

Where is the stage, dear audience? Is it within us? Or outside us?

In the prologue to Bluebeard’s Castle, the audience is invited into one of the most compelling psychological works in the history of opera. From the very beginning, it is unclear whether the castle is a real place or a reflection of our inner selves – a space of memories, desires, fears and secrets.

Bluebeard’s Castle explores, among other things, love, intimacy and truth. How well can we ever truly know another person – and how much truth can love endure?

Judith follows her new husband, Bluebeard, into his dark and gloomy castle, where seven doors are locked. Judith longs to know the man she loves and demands the keys to every door. Despite Bluebeard’s warnings, she opens them all, one by one. Behind each door, she discovers another side of him and his past. What begins as Judith’s search for truth gradually becomes something inevitable: she cannot stop until every door has been opened.

Behind the doors lie both darkness and light; horror and beauty. As Judith ventures deeper into the castle, the question becomes ever more pressing: How far should we go in our search for the truth about the person we love?

What do we keep hidden within ourselves? What does loneliness look like? How much can one person carry before something breaks? Do we have the right to know every secret of those we love?

More than a hundred years after Bartók composed the opera to a libretto by Béla Balázs, these questions remain as urgent as ever.

Bluebeard’s Castle will be presented in a semi-staged production, using Stephen Higgins’ ingenious arrangement for seven-piece chamber ensemble. Higgins condenses Bartók’s immense sound world without losing the original colours that define the work. The arrangement has been performed around the world, including in London, Edinburgh, Toronto and Atlanta, as well as in Finland and China.

Dutch director Kenza Koutchoukali directed Bluebeard’s Castle for Opera Zuid in the Netherlands in 2024, and the Reykjavík Opera Days production draws inspiration from that staging, with kind permission.

In Bluebeard’s Castle, audiences can expect a gripping performance where voices, instruments and space come together in an electrifying encounter.

Two extraordinary singers, a twelve-piece ensemble, and the incomparable musical world of Kurt Weill come together for a major concert at Reykjavík Opera Days 2026.

To mark the anniversary year of German composer Kurt Weill, singers Sigríður Thorlacius and Hildigunnur Einarsdóttir created a wide-ranging programme of songs and music for the stage spanning different periods of his career. The programme was first performed at the Við Djúpið Music Festival in the summer of 2025 and now returns for Reykjavík Opera Days.

Weill was one of the most influential and distinctive composers of the 20th century, writing music for opera, theatre and cabaret as well as jazz and popular song. His music can be seductive and sophisticated one moment, raw, sharp and provocative the next. From the vibrant cabaret scene of interwar Berlin to the theatres of Paris and Broadway in New York, Weill created a musical world in which the boundaries between classical and popular music begin to dissolve.

At Reykjavík Opera Days, Sigríður and Hildigunnur take to the stage with a twelve-piece ensemble to perform Weill’s music in new arrangements by Þórður Magnússon. Written especially for the two singers and the ensemble, the arrangements create a colourful and dynamic sound world where classical music and jazz meet, allowing the full theatrical breadth of Weill’s music to come alive.

The works are performed in German, English, French and Icelandic, reflecting the remarkable diversity of Weill’s career on both sides of the Atlantic.

Sigríður Thorlacius and Hildigunnur Einarsdóttir are two of Iceland’s most beloved singers. Close friends as well as musical collaborators, they have each made their mark in a different musical world – Sigríður in popular music and Hildigunnur in classical music. What they share is an exceptional stage presence and voices of extraordinary beauty. Here, their contrasting voices come together in music where words, characters, passion and drama are never far from the surface.

The Chamber Opera Þunnt skæni á logandi vök (A Thin Veneer on a Fiery Pool) was originally composed to a libretto by an Australian author and first performed in Reykjavík in 2021 while the world was still grappling with the Covid pandemic. It was later performed in Australia in 2023. The opera deals in a philosophical and dramatic way with the devastating bushfires which are the greatest natural threats throughout Australia.

Two years ago, it was decided to make the opera more relevant to Icelandic reality. Magnea J. Matthíasdóttir was approached to create a new libretto, in the form of a long poem. As in the original Australian version, fire was still the subject-matter, but the threat here in Iceland is not from forest fires, but volcanic eruptions, as the inhabitants of the Reykjanes peninsula in Southwest Iceland can attest to after the upheavals of the past few years. The poem deals with fire, both from the bowels of the earth as well as from above: a black blanket which can either be cooling lava or else the burnt forests and scorched land. The poem is written from the perspective of the the land and Nature, the eternal Gaia, herself, describing both the end and also new beginnings. I leave it to the listener to decide whether mankind is a part of the new beginning – or not.

In August, the chamber opera was performed in the old abandoned storage-tanks at Raufarhöfn, north-east Iceland, which gave a new dimension to the experience. Far from forest fires, far from volcanic upheavals, yet at the same time, a raw environment. Now it will be performed at the Reykjavík Opera Days in Harpa, where a cinematic and photographic exhibition by Ásdís Thoroddsen creates an inspiring setting for the work.

The opera is performed by soprano Hallveig Rúnarsdóttir with the chamber ensemble Camerarctica.

Hrafnkell Sigurðsson is the tenth artist selected for the Reykjavík Art Museum’s exhibition series at Kjarvalsstaðir, which highlights the careers of key figures in Icelandic art.

Each artist is chosen for their unique contribution and specialization in terms of media, methods, and subject matter. This positioning is reflected in the presentation of key works from different periods in the West Gallery, accompanied by a catalogue that places the artist’s career in the context of art history and the present day.

Hrafnkell is known for his refined and provocative photographic works, through which he explores ideas of beauty and challenges perception by presenting seemingly contradictory realities. The exhibition title refers to a pivotal point in the artist’s career. X marks a location, a crossroads, and the unknown.

Margrét Hrafnsdóttir’s voice is one of the most extraordinary we at Reykjavík Opera Days have heard—dramatic, rich and luscious, with the power to send electric currents through any space in which it resonates.

In this concert, Margrét and Ástríður Alda, one of Iceland’s finest pianists, explore dramatic works ideally suited to Margrét’s voice and the acoustics of Norðurljós. Director Pálína Jónsdóttir joins the creative process, and together they stretch the boundaries of the traditional concert format, playing with space and drama to create a fluid music theatre experience in which voice, music and performance intertwine.

Á efnisskránni er fjölbreytt og kraftmikil dagskrá þar sem hljóma nokkur af þekktustu kóratriðum óperusögunnar, ásamt einsöngsverkum og sjaldgæfari og spennandi perlum.

Áheyrendur fá að upplifa allt frá Kór sígaunanna (Il Trovatore) og Va, pensiero (Nabucco) eftir Verdi, þekktar aríur á borð við Habanera úr Carmen og hinn töfrandi Humming Chorus úr Madama Butterfly. Á dagskránni eru einnig glæsileg verk eftir m.a. Alexander Borodin, Kaiju Saariaho og Helenu Munktell.

Reykjavík Opera Days, in collaboration with Herning Opera Festival, presents a spectacular gala concert featuring the Nordic Opera Choir and ELJA Chamber Ensemble, conducted by Ragnheiður Ingunn Jóhannsdóttir.

The programme offers a rich and dynamic selection of music, bringing together some of the most celebrated choruses in operatic history alongside solo works and lesser-known, exciting gems.

Audiences will experience everything from Verdi’s Gypsy Chorus from Il Trovatore and Va, pensiero from Nabucco to beloved arias such as the Habanera from Carmen and the enchanting Humming Chorus from Madama Butterfly. The programme also features magnificent works by composers including Alexander Borodin, Kaija Saariaho and Helena Munktell.

Reykjavík Opera Days celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, and this Festival Gala forms part of the celebrations marking this special milestone.

Nordic Opera Choir is a Nordic opera choir bringing together 30 young professional singers and conservatoire students aged 18–35 from across the Nordic countries. The choir was initiated by Den Jyske Sangskole in Herning in 2023 with the aim of supporting the professional development of young classical singers and creating a strong professional network across the Nordic region.

Each year, the singers come together for intensive rehearsals and performances under the guidance of Nordic conductors and mentors. The choir collaborates with orchestras and music festivals throughout the Nordic countries, offering participants the opportunity to develop artistically and professionally through a vibrant, high-level Nordic collaboration.

The project is primarily funded by the A.P. Møller Foundation in Denmark. Icelandic funders and partners of Reykjavík Opera Days supporting this project include the Icelandic Music Fund, the City of Reykjavík, the Ministry of Culture, Innovation and Higher Education, the Rút Hermann Memorial Fund, Ýlir Music Fund and Kaffi Ó-le.
