At lunchtime on most Tuesdays, the National Museum of Iceland hosts a variety of events, including film screenings, guided tours and lectures.

Tuesday, 8 September is International Literacy Day. To mark the occasion, Helga Vollertsen, a specialist at the National Museum of Iceland, will discuss reading and literacy among Icelanders in centuries past.

Particular emphasis will be placed on the period from the mid-eighteenth to the mid-nineteenth century, linking the lecture to the National Museum’s current exhibitions, which offer insights into Icelandic society during that era.

The lecture is in Icelandic.

The lecture is included with museum admission. Please note that your admission ticket also serves as an annual pass, giving you unlimited access to the museum's exhibitions and events for one year from the date of purchase. Admission to all exhibitions and events is free for children and young people under 18 years of age.

Art courses for children aged 10–12 (born 2014-2016) at the National Gallery of Iceland 🎨

The National Gallery of Iceland offers creative and engaging visual arts courses for children in its new art studio at Fríkirkjuvegur 7. The courses are inspired by current exhibitions, encouraging close observation of artworks while developing participants’ sense of colour and form.

Children will explore a wide range of materials and media—such as painting, printmaking, and sculpture—through hands-on activities that emphasise both experience and dialogue. The goal is to help children approach art with confidence and curiosity.

At the end of the course, an exhibition of the children’s work will be held for friends and family.

Children should wear clothes suitable for painting, splashing, and joyful mess-making! The museum is fully accessible.

Textile artist Helga Pálína Brynjólfsdóttir talks about the sewing club Balderingafélagið Baugalín, which she has been a member of for 30 years.

Dialogue with a Designer takes place once a month. Coffee and kleinur are served in a relaxed atmosphere.

The event takes place in Icelandi and admission is free.

In this workshop we will explore ways to create poems and texts out words that we love, words we find, words we want to understand better or use more. We will let the books, the magazines and dictionaries of the City Library inspire us, we will borrow words from other languages and images from various places to stitch together some beautiful tapestry!

All ages and all levels of Icelandic welcome!

Karólína Rós Ólafsdóttir is a poet writing in Icelandic and English, working across creative writing, visual arts, and translation. Her work has appeared in magazines, publications, performances and group exhibitions in Iceland, Germany, Poland and the UK.

This project is part of the samljóða - writing workshop series and the samvera project which is co-funded by the immigration fund.

Hér flytja Brák og Benni nýja tónleikadagskrá þar sem meðal annars verður frumflutt nýtt verk eftir Arngerði Maríu Árnadóttur. Mörg verka Arngerðar eru undir þjóðlegum áhrifum og í þessu nýja verki mun hún leita á þær slóðir ásamt því að sækja innblástur til barokksins, og þá sér í lagi til kantata J.S. Bach sem hún þekkir mætavel eftir að hafa starfað sem organisti og kórstjóri í fjölda ára. Verkinu hennar Arngerðar verður síðan teflt saman við aríur úr kantötum eftir J.S. Bach og hljóðfæraverk eftir Telemann, Schaffrath og fleiri tónskáld síðbarokksins. Allt verður þetta flutt í hlýjum hljómi upprunahljóðfæra.

Á tónleikunum gefst áhorfandanum tækifæri á að hverfa til þýskalands 18. aldar og upplifa tíðaranda síðbarrokksins leikin í þeim hljóðheim sem tíðkaðist er verkin voru samin. Tala þessar sögur enn til okkar í dag? Enn fremur má fela nýju verki Arngerðar hlutverk sögumannsins, sem gefur tíðarandanum samhengi og tengingu við okkar tíma. Finnum við líkindi við þeirra tíma?

Barokkbandið Brák hefur frá árinu 2014 haldið fjöldamarga tónleika víðsvegar um landið. Bandið hefur einnig margsinnis verið tilnefnt til Íslensku Tónlistarverðlaunanna en verðlaunin féllu einmitt hópnum í skaut árið 2021 fyrir tónleikana “Brák og Bach”. Hljóðfæraleikarar Brákar hafa öðlast gríðarmikla reynslu á 10 ára starfsferli hópsins og búa nú yfir sérþekkingu á upprunaflutningi barokktónlistar. Sú sérþekking er orðin að ríkum arfi innan íslenskrar tónlistarsenu sem hefur fengið að blómstra í verkefnum hópsins.

Barokkbandið Brák hefur verið í útrás síðustu misseri og haldið tónleika fyrir fullum sal bæði í Póllandi og Lettlandi og heldur aftur til Póllands í haust á þessu ári til að flytja þetta sama prógramm, Fallin, með Benedikt Kristjánssyni á hátíðinni All’improvviso í borginni Gliwice.

Welcome to the exhibition From the crochet hook by Aðalbjörg Erlendsdóttir at Árbær City Library. 🌈🧶✨

The exhibition features textile works created by using freeform and mosaic crochet techniques, where vibrant colors and practicality come together in cushions and blankets. Some of the works belong to the art collection Dalalíf, named after the novel series by Guðrún frá Lundi, which Aðalbjörg listened to while crocheting. Other pieces developed more spontaneously. Beginning with a particular color palette and an initial idea inspired by nature, the sky, or the solar system, the works often evolved into something entirely different through the creative process.

Aðalbjörg Erlendsdóttir graduated in Fashion and Textile Design from Columbine Skolen in Copenhagen in 1992. She has held three solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group exhibitions. Prior to her design studies, she studied Biology at the University of Iceland, and her close connection to the natural world is clearly reflected in her work. Aðalbjörg, often known as “Budda,” has worked under the label Budda Design.

Throughout her career, Aðalbjörg has explored a wide range of artistic and design practices, including painting colorful patterns on silk for clothing and scarves, as well as landscape painting. In recent years, illness has a fected her ability to silk paint, leading her to crochet as a new artistic medium. The works on display at Reykjavík City Library Árbær are the result of that creative journey.

The exhibition runs until the 8th of November and the exhibition is available during the opening hours of the library.

Sinfóníuhljómsveitin opnar dyrnar að lokaæfingum á tónleikadegi fyrir flesta áskriftartónleika í gulri, rauðri og grænni tónleikaröð. Hægt er að kaupa aðgang að æfingunum í miðasölu Hörpu og á sinfonia.is. Lokaæfingin hefst kl. 10:00 en aðgangur er takmarkaður við ákveðin sæti í Eldborg á 1. svölum. Þetta er tilvalið tækifæri til að dýpka upplifun og skilning á tónlistinni sem flutt verður á tónleikum um kvöldið.

Tekið skal fram að æfingarnar eru ekki tónleikar, heldur vinnuæfingar og dagskrá þeirra því ekki endilega í fullu samræmi við tónleika kvöldsins.

Handicrafts & Book Chat

Do you love knitting or crocheting as well as reading and chatting about good books? Then these meetups are something for you.

We will meet on Thursdays between 3 pm and 5 pm in the Handicraft Corner on the 2nd floor in Grófin.

It’s nice to combine those two interests and even better to connect with others who share the same passion.

Guðrún Dís, amateur knitter, takes care of the meetups, shows up with some interesting books and leads the discussion.

This is not a traditional reading club because you don’t have to read specific books before each meeting. Just show up and take part!

The meetups can be in Icelandic and/or English, depending on the group.

No registration needed, just pop in when you are in the mood for good company.

The Iceland Symphony Orchestra's new artist in residence, pianist Bertrand Chamayou, and conductor and soprano Barbara Hannigan, will be the focus of this diverse concert that has an undeniable strong French air. Chamayou will play two compositions by his compatriots from France that both possess unique nuances. The songs of exotic birds from America and Asia inspired Olivier Messiaen to compose a colourful work for piano, wind instruments, and percussion, while Ravel's primary concern was to write a light and enjoyable piano concerto in which the soloist could shine. The composer drew inspiration from the folk music of his ancestors in the Basque Country and conjures up lively motifs and one of the most beautiful slow movements in piano literature. Arthur Rimbaud's poems were the inspiration for Benjamin Britten's composition, Les Illuminations. They tell us that the big city is at least as wild as the jungle! Waves breaking on the shore, lively parades, and magical lights illuminating dancing lovers in the evening twilight. Barbara Hannigan and the Iceland Symphony Orchestra's string ensemble perform this powerful masterpiece.

The Nest is a cosy corner of Reykjavik City Library that hosts a collection of texts and media curated by users of the library. For Pride, visitors of The Nest will be able to listen to 9 audio stories where queer people share books, songs, poetry, films and theatre works that give them a sense of belonging. In a world where people are increasingly divided, the Nest is a space to listen to people with different life experiences.

The installation will be open until the end of September on the second floor of Grófin. The stories will stay available on the library website beyond that. You are invited to a soft launch of the exhibition on the 6th of August, from 4pm to 6pm.

Critics are raving about Bertrand Chamayou's piano playing. His programming has been called original and searching, his playing dynamic, technically perfect, and breathtakingly beautiful. Songs without words is the guiding theme of this concert, as the entire repertoire is related to songs that have inspired composers. Mendelssohn's short lyrical pieces, Songs Without Words, are a fitting beginning to this journey. They are accompanied by music that rhymes with Mendelssohn's gentle and intimate songs, including Charles Ives' Song Without (Good) Words, Schumann's "Dedication," and Kurtág's dreamy retelling of a forgotten Romanian Christmas carol.

George Crumb's interpretation of Thelonious Monk's classic opus 'Round Midnight, in Eine kleine Mitternachtmusik and Takemitsu's free-form arrangement of the Beatles' Golden Slumbers take us to exotic places. The concert concludes with the magnificent Wanderer Fantasy by Franz Schubert, where each of the four movements begins with a variation on the composer's song of the same name.
