Tinna Royal opened her first exhibition, Do I Have to Be an Adult Every Day?, at Gallery Fold on April 16th. Here, Tinna Royal leads visitors through the exhibition in a lighthearted and funny way - the only way she knows how to! In regard to her art, Tinna says, “I search for the meaning of everything in life through doughnut glazes and greed. I use the media I feel I need, from sequins and beads to (toilet) paper and plastic. Mostly, though, I express myself with paint on canvas. The works that Tinna shows at Gallery Fold deal with her resistance to growing up - becoming an adult. “I am 42 years old and I still want to be a kid,” she says. She longs for the past when the perfect day was having a snack and watching children’s programming on TV. "In my paintings you can often find toys amidst food. Compositions that are actually absurd but are my dreamy resistance to finally being able to 'play with my food'." The works are done in oil but it comes with a certain tradition and sophistication and although I am in rebellion, I take painting seriously. The exhibition is not a criticism of growing up and taking responsibility. I take my responsibilities in everyday life seriously. I pay my bills and show up on time, but emotionally I hold on to the child in me so tightly that it is almost unbearably difficult to grow up.” Tinna studied art at the Akureyri School of Fine Arts. She lives in Akranes and has a studio there, and was elected Akranes’ resident artist in 2020. Tinna Royal has held numerous solo exhibitions, including in Akranes, Borgarnes, and Reykjavík. This is Tinna’s first solo exhibition at Gallerí Fold, and we welcome her to the rapidly growing group of artists at Gallerí Fold.
