Glassed is a design and development project that uses the Icelandic method of “stoning” for building cladding. Instead of imported minerals, the project experiments with waste glass that would otherwise end up in landfill. The uniqueness of the project lies in updating a traditional building method to address modern environmental challenges. Glassed is a conceptual building cladding project based on the Icelandic method known as stoning, in which crushed minerals are adhered to the outer layer of plaster. This method has proven to be exceptionally weather-resistant and well-suited to Icelandic conditions. Since minerals such as obsidian and Iceland spar are now protected, only imported materials, mainly quartz, are currently used. The goal of the project is to replace these minerals with waste glass, as the majority of glass in Iceland today ends up in landfill. Glass shares similar hardness and vitreous qualities with both obsidian and quartz, making it an ideal material for stoning that also reflects light.
