Two annexes have been added to the original building, Kringlan (the Rotunda) in 1908and Skálinn in 2002. The garden of Parliament House is Iceland's oldest public garden. Dating from 1893–95, it was largely the work of parliamentarian/bank director Tryggvi Gunnarsson. In 1867 Althingi resolved to mark the millennium of the settlement of Iceland by holding a national festival in 1874, and by building a Parliament House in Reykjavík, of Icelandic stone. There was some debate on a location for the new building: suggestions included the Arnarhóll grass field (where a statue of the first settler, Ingólfur Arnarson, now stands) and Bakarabrekka (between the present Bankastraeti 7 and Laugavegur 1), but Austurstraeti was the final choice. Danish architect Ferdinand Meldahl (1827–1908), director of the Academy of FineArts in Copenhagen, designed the building, which was erected during 1880–81 of hewn basalt from Skólavörduholt hill (site of the present Hallgrímskirkja Church). The exterior of the walls is of barely dressed stone, while the interior is plastered. The façade (north side) of the building bears ornament, most noticeably the crown and crest of King Christian IX on the roof. Under the eaves, the date 1881 is marked in metal numerals interspersed with stars. Over four of the second-floor windows, Iceland's guardian spirits are depicted in low relief: a giant, a great bird, a bull, and a dragon.","url":"https://visitreykjavik.is/service/althingi-parliament-house","geo":{"latitude":64.146358989588,"longitude":-21.93944306474}},{"id":7296,"name":"Alþingisgarðurinn parliament park","description":"Behind the Parliament House is a beautiful and peaceful garden, which is mostly surrounded by a high stone wall. The park is the oldest Icelandic public park that has been preserved in its original form since 1894. The park is a nice location to sit down on a bench and observe the environment. In Alþingi in 1893, a proposal was made on how to spend the money that had been collected in the parliament building fund from 1867. Previously, there had been an idea to use the fund to decorate the inside of the building, but now a proposal was made to allocate it for plot planning and gardening by the house. There was a lot of discussion about the proposal in the parliament, and members of parliament shared their experiences with gardening. Alþingi finally agreed to spend 1,500 krónur for construction in the park and to have the President of Parliament oversee the work. The former belonged to the town of Kópavogur (Culture Hill), and the latter to Reykjavík, meaning Elliðavatn rests on the borders of the two. Elliðavatn has a length of about 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) and a depth of approximately 1-2 meters (3-7 feet). It is located in Mosfellsbær, east of Reykjavík, Iceland. The house was built in 1945 by Halldór and his wife Auður Sveinsdóttir. The architect was Ágúst Pálsson and the interior designer was Birta Fróðadóttir. Gljúfrasteinn is built on the banks of the river Kaldakvísl and is situated close to Laxness's childhood home, Laxnes. Halldór Laxness was a prominent figure in Icelandic society and his status only increased after he won the Nobel Prize in 1955. Laxness's home became a cultural hub in Iceland where important foreign guests were brought for official as well as unofficial visits. International musicians would frequently give concerts in his living room. Paintings by some of the most celebrated 20th century Icelandic artists adorn the walls of Gljúfrasteinn. Visitors can view works by artists such as Svavar Guðnason, Nína Tryggvadóttir, Louisa Matthíasdóttir, Jóhannes Kjarval, Karl Kvaran, Ásmundur Sveinsson, as well as works by the Danish painter Asger Jorn and the Norwegian painter Jakob Weidemann. In 2002 Laxness's widow, Auður, sold the house to the Icelandic state. In September 2004 it was opened for the public as a museum.
