The first Yule Lad Stekkjastaur arrives tonight!
Although the weather outside might sometimes be frightful, spending Christmas in Reykjavík is so delightful!
With tingling lights, Christmas markets, variety of cultural events and multiple gourmet restaurants you are sure to find a way to get in the Christmas spirit. Don’t be surprised when you pick up a strange scent on the streets drawing close to Christmas, it will most likely be the smell of fermented skate, one of Iceland’s delicacy and is by tradition feasted upon on Þorláksmessa, which is the day before Christmas eve.
The Icelandic Yule Lads
Icelandic children have been waiting for this night with anticipation, or at least the well behaved ones, because tonight they will get a visit from the first Yule Lad, Sheep-Cote Clod (Stekkjastaur). The 13 Yule Lads are amongst some of the most curious Christmas creatures of Icelandic folklore and are said to come down from the mountains every December to cause all sorts of havoc in the name of Advent. They come to town one by one, the 13 last nights before Christmas and leave small gifts in shoes that children have placed in their window sills. If the child has been disobedient they leave a potato in the shoe instead!
As usual, both visitors and residents are invited to take part in the annual ‘Hunt for the Christmas Creatures’ with the chance to win a fantastic prize. It´s simple, all you have to do is locate four of the Creatures in downtown Reykjavík. There you will find the answers to the questions. Submit your results before Thursday, December 19th. 2019.
