Students from 2nd grade at Melaskóli show the results of an interdisciplinary research project they have done under the guidance of Magnús Valur Pálsson visual art teacher and Sesselja Guðmunda Magnúsdóttir, dance teacher. The project is about human connection to the sea and the shore. In addition, students have examined other phenomena of nature, e.g., glaciers and eruptions. Various artists have been working with the students. Anna Jóa worked with the students and told them about her artistic creation and her artistic processes. She i.e., creates interesting works based on various things she finds on the beach. Anna writes words with glue and sprinkles sand over them. The students were very inspired by her work and we can see clear signs of this in the giant book shown in Grófin. The giant book is composed of three doors that were to be thrown away. Students could implement the work in the way they wanted when reflecting on their relationship with the sea and the shore. Before they started, they sketched ideas and relied on texts that dance teacher Sesselja Guðmundur had written down after them. The musician Jónas Sigurðsson kindly gave permission for the use of his song Tónar við hafið, which was used as inspiration. Students did dance and movement that are to be seen in the video that is exhibited at Grófin. At the beginning of the year, the visual artist Hrafkell Sigurðsson worked with the students at glacier workshop resulted in works that were on display in Borgarbókasafn Grófinn in February. In the spring, the students wrestled with their versions of the eruption in Geldingadalur and you can see their fun view of this natural wonder in the exhibition. The project is carried out in collaboration with the development project LÁN (Learning about nature through art) (http://listraentakall.reykjavik.is)
