With increasing natural light, photography becomes easier, more accessible and opposites become clearer as the darkness retreats with increased natural light. The action of photographing or forming light has many manifestations.

The exhibition Light Space– Shadow space is based on ongoing research by Ester Jóhannesdóttir on photography in a defined space. She seeks to photograph natural light and shadows inside building interiors as well as outside with artificial lighting. That way, she wants to navigate how the brightness/light, natural or electrical, has on the space and the photo itself.

Light is a fundamental force of nature and is the basis of photography along with darkness – as without it there would be no light. Living in a country of opposites where this great amount of brightness in summer and how it diminishes in winter, has an enormous influence on people.

In her work, Ester plays with the elementary forms through light and the space between these opposites. Thus, abstract forms and shadows become clearer in the defined frame of the picture plane, still, lyricism is never far away.

Ester Jóhannesdóttir graduated with MFA from the University of Leeds in 2010 and has been creating art for more than thirty years.
