Falcons is the title of an exhibit by the Icelandic photographer Daníel Bergmann in Skotið at Reykjavík Museum of Photography. The exhibit runs from 20 October 2022 until 29 January 2023.
At the end of the last century, Daníel Bergmann started to take photographs of gyrfalcons (Falco rusticolus islandicus) in Icelandic nature – largely because he was captivated by these graceful birds and could hardly keep away from them. But also partly because it was the most difficult task, he could set himself. Birds are reluctant to be photographed, and birds of prey are especially camera-shy. So, to gain insight into the various aspects of the falcon‘s life, a photographer must generally hide, remain motionless for days at a time, and have a high tolerance for cold and discomfort while remaining on high alert. Only then does the gateway open to falcon life.

The exhibition Fálkar/Falcons showcases a selection of photographs from Daníel Bergmann‘s book Fálkinn (The Gyrfalcon), published in Icelandic in October 2022. The book is the fruit of more than two decades of fieldwork by the photographer in the gyrfalcon territory in northeast Iceland. He photographed gyrfalcons at all seasons of the year; among other things, he observed one remarkably fine female through most of her life over a period of 15 years.

Daníel Bergmann (b. 1971) lives and works in Stykkishólmur, west Iceland. He has been working on nature photography since the turn of the 21st century, with special emphasis on the fauna and landscape of the north.
