THEATER & OPERA

As for the performing arts, Reykjavik hosts a symphony orchestra, an opera, several theatre companies and the highly acclaimed Icelandic Dance Company.

Reykjavik has two major professional theatre companies, the National Theatre and the City Theatre, in addition to many independent and fringe theatre groups, professional and amateur. Productions range from the great classics of world theatre to innovative experimental works.

Productions are all in Icelandic, with the exception of occasional visiting productions from abroad. At the Icelandic Opera, operatic productions of all kinds may be seen; operas are often sung in the original language, with Icelandic subtitles.

The Icelandic Dance Company, resident at the City Theatre, focuses on contemporary dance.
