New Years' Eve in Reykjavík

Visiting bonfires on the evening of the 31st December is a tradition for most Icelanders. The bonfires symbolise "burning" away the old year and welcoming in the new one. People go to the bonfires to enjoy the warmth from the fires, meet old friends, and enjoy the often accompanying music and organised fireworks.

This year there will be four large bonfires and five smaller ones in Reykjavík, at the following locations:

1) By Ægisíða a ig bonfire. (and closest to the city centre).
2) Skerjafjörður by Skildinganes 48 – 52 a small bonfire.
3) At Suðurhlíðar, down by Fossvogur cemetery, a small bonfire.
4) West of Laugarásvegur road opposite Valbjarnarvöllur (sports stadium), a small bonfire.
5) Geirsnef, a big bonfire
6) By Suðurfell, a small bonfire
7) "Fylkisbrennan", by lake Rauðavatn, a big bonfire.
8) Gufunes, a big bonfire
9) Kléberg at Kjalarnes, a small bonfire

Here is a map to see where you can find the bonfires this year.

Most of the bonfires will be lit at 8.30 pm. Entrance to the bonfires is free of charge and everyone is welcome!
If you are here on New Year's Eve, be sure not to miss the highlight - when Icelanders "blow out the year" with an amazing fireworks display originating from practially every garden in Reykjavik, at midnight! Be sure to secure a good viewing point, for example up by the Pearl or by Hallgrímskirkja, to get the best view.
